Sophomore Trotting Fillies Star In NYSS
New York Sire Stakes continued downstate Tuesday night, with Yonkers Raceway hosting the $226,510 Scarsdale Trot for three-year-old fillies
.
Five $435,302 divisions--two on the card, three off--went postward. The first wagering event saw Stell R Time (Jordan Stratton, $8) get up on the money from second-over to whip pacesetting Julianna Marvel (Ted Wing) by a nose in 2:01.3. One Way Or Another (Brian Mattison) was a pocket third.
The winner, a homebred daughter of Dream Vacation, is four-for-12 this season for owner LaBelle Livery and trainer Stephen LaBelle. Not coincidentally, all four wins have been in the last five starts, and all with Stratton driving. Stell R Time led a $31 exacta and $142.50 triple.
"She's just come around to be a good, solid filly," Stratton said. "I was planning to leave with her tonight, but Teddy [Wing] had the jump on me, so I just had to wait."
Tuesday night's final sire stakes event was a wire job by the ultra-consistent Miss Sue V (Mattison, $6.60), finishing what she started in 1:59 (back half :58.4).
The Credit Winner miss, co-owned (as Kelley Racing) by trainer Paul Kelly and William Weaver, prevailed by a length-and-three-quarters. She has won four of her seven seasonal start and is eight-for-16 lifetime. Jersey Blue (Allan Davis) chased from the pocket and held second, with Brooklyn (Tim Tetrick) closing from last to grab third. The exacta paid $79.50, with the triple returning $460.50.
Tepid 2-1 choice Some Girls (Stephane Bouchard), the defending statebred champ, flattened out from second-up and broke in the lane (fourth-placed-fifth).
"When she gets thing her own way, she's usually tough," Mattison said of Miss Sue V. "There's only a few races in her career when she hasn't been sharp."
Tuesday's trio of NYSS non-bettors were won by:
- Eight Bells (by Conway Hall); co-owners Steve Organ and Asa Farm/trainer-driver Per Henriksen; 2:00.1;
- Imageofasweetday (by Conway Hall); co-owners Edmund and David Smith, Nicholas Andreoli, James Giannuzzi; trainer-driver John Stark Jr. (life-best) 1:59;
- Conwayslassie (by Conway Hall); co-owners D'Elegance Stb IX, TLP Stable, Player Here Stable, Carmen Iannocone/trainer Richard Johnson/driver Jeff Gregory; 1:59.
Tuesday's undercard was highlighted by the $14,000 second-race, the Mr. and Mrs. Spanky Trot. Favourite Winterleebrook (Bouchard, $7.10) grabbed the glory in 2:05 for the mile-and-one-sixteenth distance.
