Jezzy Headlines Monday NYSS At Batavia
The “Queen of New York-Bred Trotting Fillies,” Jezzy, will headline a New York Sire Stakes-filled program when racing returns to Batavia Downs Casino on Monday
, July 25.
Opening night will feature five divisions of three-year-old trotting fillies and four divisions of three-year-old colt and gelding pacers.
One of horses in town will be the fabulous trotting filly Jezzy. She’s owned in partnership by Ray Schnittker, Jerry Silva, Jeff Gural and Ted Gewertz. The daughter of Credit Winner-Ladylind has scored in 17 of her 18 lifetime starts. Her only blemish came in last year’s New York Sire Stakes Final on the Night of Champions, when she finished second to Some Girls. Trainer-driver Ray Schnittker will steer from Post 7 en in the evening’s sixth race.
To date, Jezzy has earned nearly $600,000 and trotted to a handy, six and a half length score at the Downs during her freshman season.
“It’s a honour to have a horse like Jezzy compete at the Downs,” Batavia’s Racing Secretary Joe Zambito said. “She’s the best New York-bred trotting filly that I can remember in quite some time.”
A total of 35 trotting fillies will compete for a more than $136,000 in Sire Stakes money. The filly trotters will compete in Races 2, 3, 6, 9 and 11.
On the pacing side, Flipper J, off back-to-back track record performances at Tioga Downs and at Goshen Historic Track, will lead a strong contingent of 28 sophomore pacers. Flipper J set a track record at the Batavia Downs last year when he cruised to victory in 1:54.4. Jim Morrill, Jr. picked up the catch-drive for trainer Linda Toscano and owner Ken Jacobs. Flipper J will start from Post 6 in Monday night’s 10th race.
The current track record for three-year-olds of 1:52.1, set last year by Joey The Czar, and Kenneth J’s record of 1:52 for older horses, set in 2008, could be jeopardy. Ken Jacobs also owned Kenneth J.
The pacing colts and geldings will square off in Races 1, 5, 7 and 10. The first of 12 races will get underway at 6:40 p.m. Admisson and parking is free.
