Stronach Looks To Ban Race-Day Meds
Frank Stronach has asked Florida's pari-mutuel wagering director for help in implementing a proposed program which would get ride of all race-day medications for three-year-olds at Gulfstream Park
.
According to a report by the Daily Racing Form, Stronach is looking to have the program up and running by the time Gulfstream gets its 2011-12 meet underway.
The article explains that Stronach sent a letter regarding the proposed plan to the state's pari-mutuel wagering director, Milton Champion.
The report cites Stronach's article as saying, “there are great concerns between the horse racing community and the public with regard to medication for race horses, especially on race day. Therefore I respectfully request this commission to help me implement a program that will phase out all raceday medications, including Lasix. We feel very strongly that these measures will be in the best interest of the horse and the horse racing industry.”
The article also cites Stronach as saying, “If this (Stronach's racetrack business) were still a publicly-owned company, I couldn’t do this. But that’s the business I want to be in. I want to see it run a certain way, and since it’s my money I make that decision. And hopefully most owners and trainers will agree with that decision. I’m committed to this decision.”
