APs Moneymaker Retired
Travis Umphrey has confirmed that 19-time winning Cardmaster Hanover mare APs Moneymaker has been retired from racing and is in foal
.
APs Moneymaker, a career winner of $601,878 and the holder of a 1:49.1 mark over Mohawk Racetrack, had only raced twice this year, the last test having come in late January.
Trainer Travis Umphrey has gone on the record as saying that the six-year-old bay was experiencing ongoing issues with atrial fibrillation, and that the distaffer encountered the issue in the Forest City Pace and then again at home on the farm two months ago.
"Yeah, that was her fifth time doing it," Umphrey said during a recent interview with the Woodbine Entertainment Group. "She started doing it (suffering atrial fibrillation) overnight in her stall. We checked her every morning, and that morning it was … we finally said 'enough is enough here.' We decided that we still had a big enough window to get her in foal, and it worked out, and we found out the other day that she is in foal."
Umphrey revealed that APs Moneymaker is in foal to Mach Three, but that it took three attempts.
"Yeah, it was kind of her last kick at the can," said the trainer. "We were getting pretty late in the spring and we need to get her in foal this last time, and so far so good. We'll know soon here, and hopefully she doesn't absorb the foal, but it's nice to get her in foal, even better to Mach Three."
Knock on wood, but if APs Moneymaker were to lose the foal, Umphrey said that, if the decision were up to him, he would concentrate on breeding the mare again next spring instead of returning her to the racetrack.
"No, not on my end of it," he said, in regard to whether he would return her to the track if a breeding complication rears its ugly head. "I would probably have to talk to the partners that own her, but sometimes these mares need a little time away from the racetrack to get them in foal, so I think we would've taken the time to let her settle down and work on getting her in foal in the spring again next year."
From 58 career starts, APs Moneymaker compiled a resume which read 19-10-9, $601,878 in purses and a mark of 1:49.1 taken over Mohawk as a five-year-old.
APs Moneymaker is owned by Terry Hamilton of Lethbridge, Alta., Joe Tinelli of ST Albert, Alta. and Shir Win Racing Stable of Edmonton, Alta.
