San Pail The Nation's Fastest Of 2011
Not even post ten could derail San Pail’s quest for five straight wins on Tuesday evening, as the two-time O’Brien Award winner knocked off nine foes in the $45,000 Open Handicap Trot
at Mohawk Racetrack.
Randy Waples got away fifth with San Pail while Frenchfrysnvinegar hustled the group of square gaiters by the quarter pole in a :27-second clip. Define The World left hard from post nine and tucked into the pocket, but when they hit the backstretch he moved to the outside and brushed to the top. He led at the mid-way point in :56.1, but came under final turn pressure from San Pail who commenced a first over rally as the field neared the half.
Define The World was still in command at the three-quarter pole in 1:24, but he was no match for San Pail over the final quarter. San Pail uncorked a :27.3 closing panel to seal the deal by 2-1/4 lengths over a rallying Triumphant Caviar in 1:51.4 – the nation’s fastest trotting mile of 2011. Define The World faded to finish third.
San Pail, who will look for his third consecutive Maple Leaf Trot title later this month at Mohawk Racetrack, improved this year’s record to 7-1-0 in eight starts for co-owner/breeder Glenn Van Camp of Port Perry and co-owner/trainer Rod Hughes of Dunsford, ON. The seven-year-old gelded son of San Pellegrino-Village Beauty is now a 42-time winner with earnings in excess of $1.9 million.

I hope I stirred up a
I hope I stirred up a hornet's nest. That's what being a fan is all about, and this is the sort of thing people should be talking about. In all seriousness San Pail is not just a pretty little pony trotting around the track. Waples is a gifted driver and San Pail a magnificent, rare and special animal.
I will come out and enjoy the night, albeit I will be cheering against the connections of San Pail. I really thought I was being very diplomatic and kind by using the words "dislike", and by not naming anyone specific.I truly love harness racing and sportsmanship. But beating up on the same local horses week in and week out is not much fun to watch. A great horse in his prime should be going out and testing his resolve against the best of the best, wherever the top of the class is, not wait for everyone to come to him.
And by the way,if you want to see anyone's name, it's not hidden, it's at the top of every comment, and I commend Standardbred Canada for printing all comments, not just the fluff and fandom.
Lynne Magee I agree with
Lynne Magee I agree with everything you said. It is not the track's fault when great horses come along and unfortunately there is no value in betting them. And please don't get me wrong. I was a fan long before I became a "serious" bettor and like all true fans I love seeing great horses compete.I enjoy watching the likes of San Pail and Dreamfair Eternal and the Beach. AS a bettor I just don't often bet these races. I was only pointing out that Mr. Irving was making a good point in that for those people who simply gamble for the sake of making money these great horses are not what will entice them to come to the track. Unfortunatley though I have no solution to offer and as I say I am not really complaining because I love to watch them run as do most fans of the game.
There are fans and there are gamblers, and there are both.
Great horse will always attract both to the track but for two different reasons.

Obviously, the smart bettor
Obviously, the smart bettor will pass on the San Pail races and maybe just sit back and enjoy the sheer beauty of this magnificent horse, gliding around the oval with such confidence and talent as if he owns it. That is what is so great about this sport. The power and beauty of these animals that have been on earth for over 60 million years, still having a place in society and interacting so well with humans. My message to those bettors who can't bet on horses like this---just enjoy them and forget the money 'cause they may not be doing this for a lot longer.
I love harness racing but
I love harness racing but the owners of San Pail, are obviously only interested in how much money they can "steal" in their own back yard. Come on, Arch Madness, get over here and kick some San Pail fanny! I love you San Pail, but vehemently dislike the way you are being campaigned.
Signed,
Self-appointed leader of the S.P.C.D.C. (San Pail Connections Dislike Club)

That is too bad that you
That is too bad that you feel that way and some of your words are very harsh to say the least and I personal find it offensive. We San Pail fans see it differently. We are all Horse people and Love to watch the shear beauty of a athlete in motion whether it be San Pail, Arch Madness,Lucky Jim They are all great to watch. And I can sign my true name not say Self -appointed leader. So come on out and watch an AWESOME race and enjoy the night. Cheers!!!!!!!!!
Way to go San Pail. He just
Way to go San Pail. He just glides around the race track. Looking forward to Maple Leaf Trot!!

Hats off to great horse,,may he keep on winning..

by the way,
Go Randy!!!
I love to watch Randy drive premium stock.
My favourite driver. Tell it like it is.
to all those bettors,
to all those bettors, please, this is San Pail time, but on a last note, did anyone notice the price of the place horse, enough said.
Go San Pail, kick those USA butts in the MAple Leaf trot.
It should be quite the battle between Arch Madness and San Pail. San Pail has added a new dimension lately of coming off the pace. Then again he is a great horse and can do anything he wants to.
If the weather is right we should have a 1:50 and change in the books or should I dare to dream a sub 1:50
Unfortunately he is a Gelding. I was already dreaming of an offspring. "Pail by Comparison"
Before you fine folks sit
Before you fine folks sit there and chastize Mr. Irving you need to do your research. I enjoy horse racing and it is a sport I love. But I also happen to be a gambler and this kind of race definitely does not incite me or my brother both of who have been in this game for over 35 years to gamble. This is the same problem that has plagued Hollywood Park Santa/Anita. Small fields with heavy favourites winning all the time.
As I and others have stated many times in the past racing needs it's bettors to survive. I do admit that having a great horse win is not a problem created by the track and I don't know that anything can be done about that. But as much as I enjoyed watching Niatross, and Cam Fella and Secretariat etc. those did nothing for pure gamblers and that is all Mr. Irving is pointing out.
For the life of me I don't understand the contempt that is shown to pure gamblers on this site.
When will the industry realize how much it needs us/them? If all the industry wants is fans well we can all sit at home comfortably in ourchisrs and watch the races on TV. See how far that will get the industry. I guess not too many people watch Bet Night Live where they are practically begging people to sign up for an account and start betting.
Mr. Guthrie this site was created for horse racing people of all stripes and gamblers are horse racing people as well. And before you chastize me as a gambler it may help to know I was a former owner as well.

Mr. Riga -- you are right
Mr. Riga -- you are right from the perspective of the serious gambler. But for those who simply like to go out for dinner, some fun betting and entertainment with friends (all potential owners, more serious bettors, etc.), watching San Pail race is a thing of beauty. He and Randy have a following right now and that can only be a good thing. Can't blame the owner and trainer for riding this gravy train.
Rob Irving will you also be
Rob Irving will you also be the first one to complain when this horse gets beat and you lose your 2 dollars?
Thirty-forty cents on the
Thirty-forty cents on the dollar!!Come on down to the track and bet 20 bucks and try and win 6-9 dollars or you can sit and wait 40 minutes till the next race! The track was so sure that this horse was superior to the other horses,it wouldn't allow SHOW BETTING in a TEN HORSE FIELD!!
Any wonder why young gamblers don't gravitate to horse racing!!

Give it a break. Gamblers
Give it a break. Gamblers like you should not be allowed on this sight. heres a horse and its connections that have done something great for the industry and you have nothing good to say about it. The reason why young gamblers don't gravitate isn't because of the tracks, its because of comments like yours.
By the way, congratulations to San Pail and his connections.
