'Eagle' Swoops In For Plainsman Win
Silver Eagle got up in the final strides to claim victory in the $58,100 Alberta Sires Stakes Alberta Plainsman final for three-year-old pacing colts on Sunday afternoon
at Alberta Downs.
Silent Rescue (John Chappell) left alertly from Post 7 and cleared the lead before the :27.3 first quarter mark, but Silver Eagle and driver Bill Tainsh Jr. took command down shortly after down the backstretch.
Elimination winner Bachelor Pad (Gerry Hudon) launched his first over attack from fifth during the second panel and reached the top at the half-mile mark in :58.1. Hollywood Warrior (David Hudon) followed that move and applied pressure to the new leader once he cleared. That battle continued past three-quarters in 1:26.1 with Hollywood Warrior pushing ahead as they moved into the stretch, but Silver Eagle dug in and came back on to prevail in a photo finish.
The time of the mile was 1:55 for the Brandons Cowboy-Allamerican Viking gelding. Hollywood Warrior finished a half-length behind in second and Bachelor Pad was four lengths back in third.
Silent Eagle boasts eight wins and five seconds in 15 seasonal starts, including a victory in his Adios Pick division earlier this year. The career winner of 10 races watched his bankroll climb to $82,993 after scoring his biggest victory to date. Trainer Lance Ward shares ownership of the sophomore gelding with Joe Tinelli of St. Albert and the Shir Win Racing Stable of Edmonton, Alta.
Silent Eagle paid $4.10 to win as the popular choice.
In regular racing action, With Bells On made a quarter pole move and paced away to a 1:55.3 victory in the $8,800 Fillies & Mares Open Pace earlier on the card for driver Jeff Stone.
With Bells On advanced to the lead from third and cleared ahead of Jans Rich Girl (Scott Knight) at the :28.1 opening quarter. She proceeded to the half in :57.2 and three-quarters in 1:27.1. The Kelly Hoerdt trainee had opened up a three length advantage on her rivals at the top of the stretch and could not be caught as she paced home in :28.2 for the 1:55.3 triumph. Jans Rich Girl followed one and three-quarter lengths behind while Doober Hoozzitz (Brent Grundy) rallied from last to show.
The daughter of Emery Flight-Tooting paid $5.70 to win as the odds-on choice. Hoerdt co-owns the five-year-old mare with Blair Corbeil of Beaumont, Alta. She has finished within the top three in 15 of 20 seasonal starts, earning seven wins and $54,998 in purses. The victory was No. 14 in her career and bumped her bankroll to $136,194.
