'Madonna' Is Much The Best In Mares Open
Southwind Madonna notched her first win in over two months when she cruised to victory in Friday's $42,000 Mares Open at Mohawk Racetrack.
Starting from Post 6, driver Lyle MacArthur negotiated a pocket ride with Southwind Madonna, tracking the every move of Four Starzz Meliss (Luc Ouellette) through a first half mile in :26.4 and :55.1.
Southwind Madonna got in gear at the 1:23.1 three-quarters as MacArthur had her popping the pocket and quickly opening up four lengths on the field in a blink of an eye.
Under minimal urging, Southwind Madonna coasted to the wire, winning by two and three-quarter lengths in 1:51.2. Pink Kangaroo (Dave Wall) finished second while To Helen Back (Mike Saftic) completed the top three.
Carl MacArthur trains and co-owns Southwind Madonna with Talacadac Stable. In 20 starts this season, 'Madonna' has a record of 8-6-3 and earnings of $312,648. It was the 20th lifetime win for the five-year-old Camluck mare, who boasts a bankroll of $783,585.
