San Pail Wins; Hare Craft In 1:49.3

Two-time O’Brien Award winner San Pail extended his winning streak to four-in-a-row on Tuesday evening thanks to an effortless score in the $45,000 Open Trot at Mohawk Racetrack, and later on the card Hare Craft turned in a punishing effort

in his second start for new connections.

Taking on eight foes while starting from post nine, San Pail was in no hurry in the early going for driver Randy Waples, who floated away fifth with the seven-year-old son of San Pellegrino-Village Beauty. Define The World shot to the lead from post eight in his first start since returning from Europe, and he was able to dictate the pace through sensible fractions of :27.3 and :57.4 before feeling any type of pressure.

Triumphant Caviar popped off the rail from fourth and was up to engage the leader at the mid-way point, and he was just a quarter of a length behind Define The World at the three-quarter pole in 1:25.4. San Pail, in the meantime, was setting up a second-over rally while sitting third on the outside. Waples tipped San Pail three-wide coming out of the final turn and the gelding used a :26.4 closing panel to win by 1-1/4 lengths over Define The World in 1:53. Equity shot up the rail late and grabbed third prize.

Sent off as the 2-5 favourite in the nine-horse affair, San Pail improved his 2011 record to 6-1-0 in seven starts for breeder Glenn Van Camp of Port Perry, ON, who shares ownership on the superstar with trainer Rod Hughes of Dunsford, ON. The victory was San Pail’s 41st lifetime tally and the $22,500 payday lifted his lifetime earnings to $1,895,215.

Just two races later Hare Craft laid a whooping on his pacing counterparts in a $22,000 conditioned event. Aaron Byron sat off the speed in the early going with the three-year-old son of Yankee Cruiser-Hare Trigger, who took over shortly past the mid-way point in :54.4. He proceeded to sprint to the three-quarter pole in 1:22.2 and then the finish line in 1:49.3. The margin of victory was 5-1/2 lengths over runner-up Show Topper, with Cam B Zipper rounding out the top three finishers.

Trained by Ryan Maxwell and owned by Steve Heimbecker of Waterloo, ON, Hare Craft improved his 2011 record to 4-1-1 from just seven starts while lifting his lifetime earnings to $91,244.
