Rookies Impress At Mohawk

Freshmen pacers were on display in a pair of $17,000 tilts at Mohawk Racetrack on Monday evening, with Astor and YS Gold Star producing maiden-breaking victories in their respective assignments

.

Astor (Camluck-Ask For It) went to the front and didn’t look back in his pari-mutuel debut for trainer Bill Budd. Mike Saftic hustled the colt through panels of :26.4, :57.3 and 1:26.2 before storming home in :27.3 to win by a nose over a hard-closing Jake Sully (Grinfromeartoear-Orillia Sadie) in 1:54. Third prize was earned by Avanza (Lis Mara-Macon Up).

Enviro Stables Ltd of South Hampton, NY owns the colt who was purchased for $47,000 from last year’s Canadian Yearling Sale. The youngster is a half-brother to Rustle For It (1:51.4 - $252,794).

YS Gold Star (Armbro Deuce-Kikin Up Dirt) got off to a slow start in her debut effort, but a ferocious surge in the late stages of the mile helped her power away from her female foes. Sylvain Filion got away eighth with the Daniel Martin-trained miss before picking up cover and sitting sixth at the mid-way point. She was second and still parked at the three-quarter pole in 1:28, but her :27-second kick on the end of the mile propelled her to a 1-3/4 lengths tally in 1:55.1 over Banner Brule (Banner Yankee-Armbro Vanilla). Grins Little Flirt (Grinfromeartoear-Pacific Hurricane) was a solid third.

Yves Sarrazin of La Presentation, QC owns the first-time starter who was a $13,000 purchase from last year’s Lexington Select Yearling Sale. The filly is a three-quarter sister to Kinetic Yankee (1:51 - $469,892).
