Yorkton Forced To Cancel

The standardbred race season got under way Friday night at Cornerstone Raceway in Yorkton Friday, but Mother Nature was apparently not in the mood for racing

.

The race card started in the rain, and after three races in increasingly heavy rain, the night was called due to sloppy conditions which was already hampering the start truck in races two and three.

While only three races made it to the track, it was still a pretty good outing for David Cameron of Regina. The 74-year-old driver didn't seem to mind the mud as he took his drives to the winner's circle in both the first and second races.
However Cameron said after the shortened card it was tough on the track.

"It was really bad," he said, admitting by race three "I couldn't see anything."

Cameron said in his long career he has driven in lots of mud, but the issue Friday was water lying on the track, and falling as they raced, in addition to mud. He said mud can be flicked off goggles, but the wet conditions really impeded vision.

"There was too much water out there," he said.

As for the two wins, Cameron said he tried to get to the front early.

"You always want to get to the front when it's wet. When it's muddy you've got to get to the front," he said.

In the case of his horses Friday there was an added question mark going into the races.

"It was the first time they've gone in the mud," he said.

In race one Cameron piloted Giro Elegance to top place on what was termed a heavy track. It was only the fourth race of the nine-year-old mare's career and was her first top-three finish. Giro Elegance is something of a project for Cameron. He said it was a mare no one could get to pace, but he took a chance on the mature horse and seems to have her ready to go. Digits Darby for driver Brad LeDrew was second, with Shawn Worthen taking Cataj Trophe getting in for third.

In race two it was MacKenzies Wish that took top spot for Cameron, who owns and trained both of his winners. Naknak Whodare with Worthen in the cart was second, with Terry Kaufman driving Kinda Special for show honours.

Cameron said four-year-old MacKenzies Wish is a horse he thinks can have a solid season in Yorkton.

"I've got big hopes for her," he said.
