Ladner Final Attracts Region’s Best

One of the biggest cards of the season will take place Saturday at Red Shores Racetrack & Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park

. Post time for the 12-race event featuring the Cecil Ladner Memorial Consolation, $7,100 Final and four Maritime Breeders Eliminations for Colts and Fillies is 6:00 p.m. The card carries purses totaling $31,650. The Bell-Aliant Race Day show begins at 5:30pm at redshores.ca

The Cecil Ladner Memorial Final has the region's best with As Tuff As Nails drawing post 6 in the rich final. The Wayne Whebby owned and trained son of Bettors Delight made headlines last week in the elimination when he stopped the timer in an awesome 1:55.1 for driver Marc Whebby. The post position tells a much different story this week with elimination two winner Joseph Michael leaving for post two for driver Todd Trites. Race secretary Gerard Smith has listed As Tough As Nails as the 5-2 morning line favourite while race analyst Les MacIsaac is backing Joseph Michael in the rich event. “He went right to the front from the seven hole and pretty much had things his own way,” explained the host of Handicapper’s Selections in the race program. “Despite the improved post it might not be as easy but I think he’s got a good shot to sweep the series.”

The power-packed field will have much to say on the outcome. Oakrock Almighty, who finished third last week, gets the services of Gilles Barrieau. The N.B. driver, who is in town for the MBA eliminations, will try to work out a trip from the rail while Paul Gray’s Oakmont and Danny Romo leave from post 8. Matt Trapper, with Brian Andrew, will start from post 4 and has the respect of the betting public. Putnams Force could be the sleeper in the field. The four-year-old, owned by Ross Toole, Truro, N.S., came up with a big trip in the elimination by tipping three wide down to the backstretch to finish second with :29.1 closer. Ryan Ellis, a commercial pilot, will be at the controls when the wings release the field. Ultimate Success and Roscoes Child raced well to make it to the final but the line-up is stacked pretty good.

In other news on the action packed card, Outlawpositivcharg is considered the favourite in the Ladner Memorial consolation in race 9 while four divisions of the Maritime Breeders will also be staged on the night. The colts will race in three divisions while the fillies take the spotlight in two splits on the program.

Fans will get a special treat at 11:30 a.m. when the future stars of harness racing will compete on the racetrack. The baby races, starring 36 two-year-olds will strut their stuff over the legendary oval. The track will also carry the 1$.5 Million Pepsi North American Cup live from Mohawk Racetrack.
