Open Trot Hat Trick For San Pail
Two-time O’Brien Award winner, San Pail, marched to the lead and didn’t look back for driver Randy Waples in Tuesday’s feature race at Mohawk Racetrack, and that marked the 40th time the gelding has visited victory lane in his memorable career
.
San Pail, who squared off with nine foes in this week’s edition of the $45,000 Open Trot, shot to the top right from the outset and proceeded to slice out splits of :27.2, :57.2 and 1:26.1 before roaring home in :27.2 to win by three lengths in a time of 1:53.3. Hes A Demon, who sat a pocket trip throughout the mile, was second best, with Slave Dream overcoming late interference to finish a hard-charging third.
Sent off as the 1-5 choice, San Pail improved his 2011 record to 5-1-0 in six starts for trainer Rod Hughes, who shares ownership on the six-year-old son of San Pellegrino-Village Beauty with co-owner/breeder Paul Van Camp of Port Perry, ON. The lion’s share of the purse lifted this year’s earnings to $161,250 while his lifetime total soared to $1,872,715.
