Nova Scotia ship-in As Tuff As Nails advanced first over after getting away fourth and claimed the lead at the three-quarters mark. The four-year-old gelded son of Bettors Delight-Like A Cupcake then opened up three lengths on the field as he sprinted home for the 1:55.1 victory, his fourth in a row. Putnams Force (Ryan Ellis) finished second over favourite Oakmont (Danny Romo). Roscoes Child (Brodie MacPhee) was fourth.
Marc Whebby did the driving for trainer and owner Wayne Whebby of Dartmouth, N.S. As Tuff As Nails paid $10.80 to win for the mild 4-1 upset. The win was his fourth in 11 starts this year.
Shipping in from Ontario, Joseph Michael took control of the field in the second elimination after leaving from Post 7, and front-stepped his way to a 1:57.1 score as the fan favourite. Pocket-sitter Matt Trapper (Brian Andrew) finished one length behind and first over challenger Oakrock Almighty (Ron Matheson) was third. Ultimate Success (Leonard Myers) was fourth.
The four-year-old son of Jennas Beach Boy-Jaydexter was driven by Todd Trites for trainer Eric Wilson and owners Capital A Investments Ltd. Of Lower Cambridge and Valerie Phelan of Geary, N.B. He paid $3.30 to win for the fourth time in 13 starts.
The $5,000 (added) final will take place next Saturday, June 18 along with a $3,400 consolation.
