Bob Dewar Memorial Stakes Contested

The Bob Dewar Memorial Stakes for three-year-old pacing colts highlighted the Wednesday night card of harness racing at Red Shores Summerside

with five $5,700 divisions.

Pictonians Souwest, in line to Gary Chappell, reeled in early leader New School and driver Jason Hughes past the opening quarter to take control and held on to win the first division in a career-best 1:57.1. The Wayne Bell-trained and Dan Ross-owned son of Western Paradise-Southview Sasha prevailed by half a length over New School in his second start of the season. Last year's Atlantic Breeders Crown champion, picked up a cheque in his season's debut, an Atlantic Sires Stakes event on May 29 at Inverness.

Putnams Power, a son of Force Of Life-Southview Shania, cruised to a 1:58.3 score in the second division of the Dewar for trainer-driver Danny Romo. Last year's Maritime Breeders champion, owned by Ronald Seymour Jr. and Bruce Donovan of Glace Bay, N.S., is now perfect in three starts this season, including his Atlantic Sires Stakes division.

Windemere Express took a new lifetime record of 1:58.4 in the third division, holding off pocket-sitter Tiger Williams and driver Kenny Arsenault by half a length. Joey Pineau sent the colt off the wings and set up shop on the front end to capture the hardware for trainer Earl Watts and owner Windemere Farms of North Wiltshire, P.E.I. The win was the Harrods-Michelles Wish colt's second in three 2011 starts.

Pictonian Fancypas took the next division for Todd Trites in 1:58.3 and trainer-owner Steven Lewis of Millville, N.S. The son of Island Fantasy-Western Pass shot wide around eventual runner-up Woodmere Sandman and Stephen Trites past three-quarters to come on for the half-length victory, his first in three seasonal starts.

Camcun completed the Bob Dewar Memorial Stakes with a 1:57.4 victory, his best in two wins from three career starts. Trainer Kenny Arsenault drove the Camluck-Go West Ndont Stop for his co-owner and breeder Dan Belliveau of Halifax, N.S.

Racing returns Thursday at Red Shores Charlottetown. Post time is 7 p.m. The Cecil Ladner Memorial eliminations highlight the Saturday card of racing. which begins at 6 p.m. The action will be carried world-wide at www.redshores.ca.
