San Pail Solid In Mohawk Open
Two-time O’Brien Award winner, San Pail, resurfaced at Mohawk Racetrack on Tuesday evening, and once again he had his way with seven foes in the $45,000 Open
Trot.
With Randy Waples calling the shots from the sulky, San Pail slipped into an early four-hole while Frenchfrysnvinegar hustled to the lead and supplied the eight-horse field with an opening quarter clocked in :26.4. San Pail engaged in battle with the leader in the backstretch, and he was in charge by the time the field hit the half in :55.4. San Pail held the top spot at the three-quarter pole in 1:25.3 while feeling mild pressure from All Cantab, but the Rod Hughes pupil uncorked a :27.2 final frame en route to winning by a length over Frenchfrysnvinegar in 1:53. All Cantab held on to finish third.
Hughes shares ownership on the homebred with Glenn Van Camp of Port Perry, ON. The seven-year-old son of San Pellegrino-Village Beauty, who was voted Canada’s Older Trotting Horse of the Year in 2009 and 2010, has produced a 4-1-0 record in five starts this season. The 39-time winner has stashed away in excess of $1.8 million to date.
