Upsets Continue In Florida's Top Class

A ground saving trip from third on the inside proved to be the winning tactic for Sugars Pride as he collared the favoured pacesetter Four Starz Bling, in rein to Wally Hennessey. Chuck Connor Jr. waited until mid-stretch to fan out widest with Sugars Pride, a seven-year-old All American Ingot-Cherchez La Femme gelding, to stop the clock in 1:52.1. Four Starz Bling set all the pace in :27.2, :56.2 and 1:24.2, and disposed of the first over bid of C A Marauder, driven by Richard Simard, but he could not hold off the late brush of Sugars Pride.
It was the 25th career win for Sugars Pride to increase his lifetime earnings to $234,049. Gerald Greer handles the training duties for the Pilgrim Stable of Pompano Beach, Florida. Four Starz Bling did hold the place position and Dartagnan, with Veral Bowman in the bike, brushed in sharply for third.
It was the second straight week for a big odds upset in the top weekly pacing class at Pompano Park as Sugars Pride was sent off at 13-1. Last week Maxines Menace won the $14,000 purse event at a 15-1 mutuel price.
In the $8,500 purse secondary pacing feature, Avantage took advantage of a class drop to to pass tiring rivals in the final half to score in 1:53.2 over Tough Trooper, in rein to Wally Hennessey, and Prime Time Talent, with Mike Deters in the bike. Mickey McNichol was in the bike to score with the five-year-old Electric Stena-Eclatante gelding for trainer Michel Plouffe and owner Elizabeth Zimmerman of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
