McCauley Mows Down Promo Prize

While Giddy Up Lucky paced to victory in the $200,000 Dan Patch Invitational, several patrons won big in Indiana Standardbred Association promotions Saturday evening, May 28 at Hoosier Park. The ISA gave away $18,000 in cash and prizes throughout the Dan Patch program, including $10 in wagering vouchers to each registered patron.

Lahoma McCauley, of Kettering, Ohio, won the night’s top prize, a Toro Zero-Turn mower, furnished by The Mower Shop in Fishers, Ind. and valued at $3,000. McCauley’s name was drawn by Eric Goodell, driver of Dan Patch winner Giddy Up Lucky, following the feature. The family had plenty to celebrate, as earlier in the card Gran Gabriel, a filly co-owned by her son, Steve, in partnership with Velocity Standardbreds, won a $40,000 Indiana Sires Stakes leg for sophomore pacers in 1:54.4.

“This is my first time here,” McCauley admitted. “I didn’t know what I was supposed to do when I heard my name. This was fun and we had a good time tonight.”

In the night’s 10th race, another Indiana Sires Stakes contest, 10 contestants had a chance to own a horse for the night and compete for a $5,000 purse. After the contestants were drawn, each had the opportunity to pick a case containing the post position and name of a horse entered in the race. Celina, Ohio resident Tommy Gibbons had the good fortune to select the case holding favorite and eventual winner Radar Contact’s name and post position. The Dontgetinmyway filly, guided by Dan Shetler, won the event in 1:56.1, earning Gibbons a cool $2,000.

Elwood, Ind. resident Bill Savage pocketed $1,250 when his horse, Slickety Split, finished three parts of a length back in second. Contestants Kevin Slabach ($600), Glen Bontrager ($400) and Montana Spencer ($250) also cashed in when their selections, Dollys Joy, Skyway Flight, and Scratch, rounded out the top five. The remaining participants each received $100.

“This is great; it’s fantastic,” Savage said afterward. “This was more fun than I’ve had in a long time. My horse had 23-1 odds and she almost won. I couldn’t believe it.”
