New Millionaire Giddy Up Lucky Wins Dan Patch
Giddy Up Lucky made a three-wide move around the final turn to roar home as the winner in the 18th edition of the $200,000 Dan Patch Invitational Pace at Hoosier Park Racing & Casino on Saturday
. Driven by Eric Goodell, the six-year-old Camluck gelding stopped the timer in 1:50.1 over a sloppy track surface for his fourth win in nine starts in 2011.
Starting from Post 7 in the eight-horse lineup, Giddy Up Lucky was willing to leave and find a spot near the leaders early. However, the horses to the inside all showed early foot, leaving him no choice but to fall into place in seventh at the quarter-mile marker in :26.1. Allthatgltrsisgold and Dave Magee led the field onto the backstretch.
Goodell was not satisfied with his position and immediately pulled Giddy Up Lucky to the outside, flushing cover to the halfway point in :54.1. Heading into the turn, several horses moved to the outside headed by Vintage Master and Daniel Dube, who led the charge toward the leaders. Goodell tipped off of the back of Won The West and Ricky Macomber Jr. in the turn and was in the center of the track, ready for the charge home at the three-quarter mile marker in 1:21.4.
Giddy Up Lucky and Vintage Master were the two strongest contenders for the title halfway through the lane. In the final strides, Giddy Up Lucky pulled away for the win by one and one-quarter lengths over Vintage Master. Golden Receiver and Peter Wrenn took advantage of a perfect trip inside for third.
“The race worked out as well as I could hope,” said Goodell, who has more than 4,300 career wins. “This horse [Giddy Up Lucky] really tries hard. He’s a class horse and has a lot of speed. When I tipped him to the outside, he was in good striking position. They came back on him and he picked it up in the end. He’s a long horse and a half-mile track does him no justice.”
Owned by Baron Racing Stable and VIP Internet Stable LLC of Pennsylvania and New Jersey, Giddy Up Lucky earned millionaire status with the win in the Dan Patch. He now has 36 career wins for trainer Josh Green.
A total of $113,508 was wagered on the race, more than twice the amount for the 2010 event. Also, a special $20,000 guaranteed superfecta pool was offered, pulling in a total of $31,800 for the wager.
