Fitzs Z Tam Edges Out Preferred Pacers

Full of late pace, Fitzs Z Tam fanned wide and came on for a 10-1 upset in the $35,000 Preferred Pace on Saturday night at Mohawk Racetrack for driver Roger Mayotte and trainer Kevin McMaster

Inside starter World Away (Mike Saftic) blasted off the gate keeping early leavers Lucky Man (Sylvain Filion) and Major Hottie (Chris Christoforou) staked up three-wide into the first turn. But Lucky Man eventually settled on top ahead of World Away as the first quarter flashed up in :26.2 with Major Hottie dropping back into third.

Lucky Man showed the way to the half in :54 and three-quarters in 1:21.4 with Ideal Race leading the outer flow, which consisted of Mach Dreamer (Murray Brethour) and Fitzs Z Tam.

Fitzs Z Tam and Mayotte, who sat sixth for most of the mile, rallied widest of them all as they entered the stretch and came on to score by a neck in 1:50.1. To his inside, it was Major Hottie, World Away and Lucky Man who followed in close quarters.

Fitzs Z Tam paid $22.80 for the upset. The four-year-old gelded son of Cole Muffler-Broadway Rosemarie is owned by the McMaster Stables Inc. of Guelph, Ont. The win was his fifth in 17 seasonal starts and pushed his earnings to $52,250. The 10-time career winner not boasts $166,850 in lifetime earnings.
