Balzac Hanging By A Thread
"The general belief is that horse tracks don't make money and I try to tell people that due to the revenue sharing with the government of Alberta and this past history with Stampede, in fact, you can."
On today's Trot Radio, Norm Borg interviews UHA President Darcy Marler about the status of the Balzac project in light of the recent comments made by Calgary Stampede officials bemoaning the loss of live racing. Marler was asked if there was a possibility of transferring UHA's license to the Calgary plant if the CrossIron Mills project does not get funding.
"The application we have is specific to the Balzac site," stated Marler, "so the slot machines we're applying for are only good for that specific piece of dirt, can't be transferred to the Stampede."
Borg and Marler also discuss the status of the racetrack project that would conceivably bring back harness racing to the Calgary area. With the backing of a Las Vegas casino, Marler acknowledges that discussions are ongoing and complex.
"I think we're in a position now, I would say by mid-June we'll either be full speed ahead or we'll be D.O.A."
