Top Horses In Action On Saturday
Hambletonian champ Deweycheatumnhowe and North America Cup winner Somebeachsomewhere, who occupy the top two spots in the Hambletonian Society/Breeders Crown weekly poll, will both be in action Saturday, September 6 at Mohawk Racetrack.
Deweycheatumnhowe, the undefeated three-year-old trotter, will race in the eliminations for the $1 million Canadian Trotting Classic while Somebeachsomewhere, the once-beaten three-year-old pacer, will compete in a division of the Simcoe Stakes.
On August 30, Deweycheatumnhowe won the $565,000 World Trotting Derby in DuQuoin, Illinois. Driven by trainer Ray Schnittker, Deweycheatumnhowe posted the fastest trotting mile of the year – 1:50.4 – and the fourth quickest in history for a three-year-old. He has won all 17 of his career races and earned $2.2 million.
"My horse is real game," Schnittker said. "When you come down the lane you just sit there with him and he puts them away. It was a nice win for him. If I'd gone faster I probably would have broken the world record, but there's no money for records. He was really good. He does everything right. It makes life easy for me."
Schnittker's trip to the World Trotting Derby with Deweycheatumnhowe was a rare one-race day for the Middletown, New York resident. Often, Schnittker races at multiple tracks on the same day.
"Just get on a plane, drive the horse, drink a bunch of beers on the way home – it doesn't get better than that," Schnittker said with a laugh.
Deweycheatumnhowe will start from post two in his seven-horse Canadian Trotting Classic elim, which also includes Hambletonian runner-up Crazed.
Somebeachsomewhere has won four races in a row since suffering his only loss in the Meadowlands Pace to Art Official in a world-record 1:47 mile. In his most recent start, Somebeachsomewhere won the Confederation Cup with a world-record performance at Flamboro Downs. He has won 14 of 15 career races and $2.2 million.
