Plato, who won a pair of OSS Gold Series eliminations during last year’s rookie campaign, rallied to a 1:58.1 victory in his first charted line of the season for trainer Greg Johnson. Trevor Ritchie used a :29.1 final quarter to achieve the good-looking line with the three-year-old son of Andover Image-Pom Derable, who banked just over $86,000 last season.
Bettors Green, who is listed at 55-1 in Trot Magazine's Pepsi North America Cup Spring Book, closed from just off the pace in his second prep of the season and went home a winner in 1:56 over fellow NA Cup eligibles Rock Of Glory (35-1) and Mach Of Ballykeel (55-1). Mario Baillargeon did the driving for trainer Ben Wallace, who co-owns the three-year-old son of Bettors Delight-Grass Is Greener with Brad Grant. The colt was stakes-placed during a 2-for-7 rookie campaign.
OSS graduate Lexis Noah romped to a 1:58.3 win in the third qualifier of the Monday morning session. Mike Saftic had the four-year-old son of Malabar Maple-Conway Connie on the lead through panels of :28.3, :58.1 and 1:28.4 before finishing the mile with a :29.4 final frame. Norm Dunstan owns and trains the career winner of $213,160, who was unraced as a rookie.
NA Cup eligible Western Alumni, who is 70-1 in ">Trot Magazine's Pepsi North America Cup Spring Book, was a gate-to-wire winner for driver Randy Waples and trainer Bruce Goit in 1:57.4. The three-year-old son of Western Hanover-Countryview Miss, who assembled a 1-3-0 record during a five-start juvenile campaign, led through fractions of :29.4, :59.2 and 1:28.4 before using a :29-second closing panel to secure the win.
Major Hottie, the fastest free-legged pacer in the history of the sport, ripped through fractions of :27, :56.4 and 1:26.4 on his way to a six-length score in 1:54.1 for driver Chris Christoforou. The Steve Charlton-trained six-year-old son of Art Major-Dominatricks went 9-for-36 last season.
Other winners from this morning were Random Holdup (2:01.4), Tilly Seelster (1:59.3) and Whiskey Tax (2:00.1).
