Barona Ice Repeats In Alberta Downs’ Open
Last second heroics helped Barona Ice take home top honours in the $8,700 Open at Alberta Downs on April 16, and it was more of the same for the pacer
in Monday’s edition.
Barona Ice, who was handled by Bill Tainsh, Jr., got away last in the five-horse affair while Killean Cut Kid stepped to the top and sliced out an opening panel clocked in :28.3. He continued to lead the way to the mid-way point in :59.1, but Barona Ice was on the move while sitting third on the outside.
Killean Cut was still in command at the three-quarter pole in a stepped-up tempo of 1:26.1, but Barona Ice swept to the top and opened up three lengths on the field at the top of the stretch before cruising home to win by 1-1/4 lengths in 1:54. Timberline Court came on late to finish second, and Neal Diamonique rallied to take home third prize.
Trained by Douglas Stout and owned and bred by Barona Yearlings of Spruce Grove, AB, Barona Ice notched his 12th lifetime victory while boosting his lifetime earnings to $192,240.
