Driver Remains Hospitalized After Spill

Trot Insider has received an update on the conditions of veteran reinsmen Del Chupp and Casey Leonard, who were involved in a nasty spill that took place just after the start of the second race of Maywood Park’s Thursday card

.

Leonard, who sustained a dislocated shoulder in the wreck, had the shoulder popped back into place by doctors and was discharged from Gottlieb Memorial Hospital late last night.

The news for Chupp was not as encouraging as the 46-year-old Crete, Illinois resident sustained two broken bones in his back. Chupp, who remains hospitalized at Gottlieb, will be forced to wear a body cast for approximately three to four months while the fractures heal. X-rays of his left leg were negative but after complaining of pain in the leg throughout the day on Friday an MRI was performed. Results of that test have not come back as of 4 p.m.

The accident occurred right after the start of the second race as Chupp’s drive, Nachoordinarygirl, made a nasty break leaving the gate from post position eight. That caused the three-year-old filly to veer sharply to her left and directly into the path of Leonard and his horse, Bonnies Baby Girl.

Both horses and drivers tumbled hard to the ground but the remainder of the field was not affected by the incident.
