Don Monkman, Sr. Passes
Longtime trainer-driver Don Monkman Sr. passed away on Thursday, March 17 after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's disease
. He was 83.
Monkman Sr. raced at all the tracks in British Columbia and California, and spent some time at the Eastern Seaboard tracks as well. He is survived by wife Marion, sons Don Jr. (prominent Alberta horsemen), John, Ron, Tom and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Monkman Sr.'s most prominent horse was Grangers Pride, who won so many races in Western Canada that he was quite often barred from betting.
