Summer Camp Takes Dover Preferred
A dead game Summer Camp edged out race favourite Schoolkids in deep stretch came to take home bragging rights in Monday’s $36,000 Preferred
Handicap at Dover Downs.
Summer Camp, who was saddled with post seven in the eight-horse affair, got away fourth for driver Andy Miller while Schoolkids and Jeremys Successor battled to the quarter pole in :26.4. Jeremys Successor cleared to the lead, but Schoolkids shot to the front as the field moved in front of the grandstand.
Schoolkids was then joined on the outside by Summer Camp, and they did battle to the half in :55 and the three-quarter pole in 1:22 before Summer Camp edged by in the closing strides en route to the 1:50.3 score. Schoolkids, who settled for the runner-up award, was a neck in arrears. Harlingen Hanover was a lapped-on third in what turned out to be a blockbuster of a finish.
