Jiffy Lee Remains Perfect In 2011

Jiffy Lee brushed three-wide past the third quarter mark and sprinted home to keep her 2011 record unblemished in the opening division of the Be My Valentine Series for $5,000 claiming mares Saturday at Kawartha Downs

Driven by Fred Brethour for trainer and co-owner Jamie Copley, the eight-year-old Village Jiffy-Lee Ann Holly mare won by one and three-quarter lengths in 1:59.2 over a “good” track rated two seconds off. Ok Carolion (Steve Skilton) and Island Of Luck (Tony Kerwood) followed the winner, who paid $3.30 as the odds-on favourite.

Owned by Copley and Ecuries Maguire Inc. of Sainte-Marie, Que., Jiffy Lee recorded her fourth win of the season in as many starts. She was claimed for $6,250 by John Macmillan of Spencerville, Ont.

Sauble Lt waited until the stretch before rallying off cover to prevail in the second $4,000 division by half a length, matching Jiffy Lee’s winning time.

Brad Rae drove the 10-year-old Northern Luck-Triple Actress mare, who picked up her first win in three outings this year, for trainer Peter LaRush, who co-owns with George Blatherwick of Shannonville and Bob Bailey of Norwood, Ont.

The popular Joint Effort (Gord Brown) finished second and the winner’s stablemate, Albany Seelster (Fred Brethour), was third.

Sauble Lt returned $7.70 to her backers as part of the second choice entry.
