Strangles Outbreak Near Barrie

The Ontario Racing Commission advises that there has been an outbreak of Strangles at a horse training centre near Barrie, Ontario. Strangles is a highly contagious and serious infection of horses and other equines caused by the bacterium, Streptococcus equi.

Local veterinarians are dealing with the situation and have implemented control measures.

Provided that these measures are adhered to, there is very little risk to the local horse population. In addition, Georgian Downs has carried out sanitation procedures to prevent any spread of the disease at that facility.
