Micallef Trainees 1-2 In Blizzard Final
Owner/breeder Stu Bolender of Elora, Ontario and trainer Tan Micallef had a big night last Thursday at Woodbine Racetrack after sweeping the eliminations for this year’s Blizzard Stakes
, but their luck didn’t end there. That same duo watched stablemates Hustleonhome and Hat Trick Honey finish first and second in Thursday’s $60,000 final of the Blizzard Stakes at Woodbine Racetrack.
Hustleonhome, who captured last week’s elimination in 1:57, earned a new speed badge of 1:54 in Thursday’s final for driver Sylvain Filion. The four-year-old daughter of Million Dollar Cam-Double Tease tucked into the four-hole in the early going while Keystone Nobility hammered out an opening quarter in a :27-second clip. She was still in command of the pace at the mid-way point in :57 seconds, but Hustleonhome brushed to the top shortly past the half and zipped by the three-quarter pole in 1:25 while feeling mild pressure from Hat Trick Honey.
Hustleonhome kicked away coming off the turn and then used a :29-second kicker to seal the deal by 1-1/2 lengths over Hat Trick Honey. Wish Away closed from well off the pace to finish third.
Bolender, who recently returned from vacation only to learn one of his broodmares was miraculously rescued during a mishap at a nearby farm, watched his homebreds grab $45,000 of the $60,000 prize in Thursday’s contest. The lion’s share of the purse lifted Hustleonhome’s overall earnings to $89,590.
