Sammy Syd Scores In WFR Feature

Driver Mike Whelan wasted little time in taking the bull by the horns with Sammy Syd in Tuesday’s $12,600 Fillies & Mares Preferred Pace at Western Fair Raceway, and once the distaffer made the lead it was game over

.

Sammy Syd, a seven-year-old daughter of Astreos, shot to the top and cruised through fractions of :29.1, :58.4 and 1:28.1 before sealing the deal with a final quarter clocked in :29.3. Her margin of victory was 2-1/4 lengths in the 1:57.4 performance. Grandma Dorothy was a determined runner-up though saddled with a first over trip, and the show dough went to Chief Karen.

Trainer Jean Young, who co-owns the mare with her husband, Gord, watched the O.S.S. graduate lift her lifetime earnings to $255,476 with the win. It was her first tally of the season for the 27-time winner.
