Fillies Front And Centre In Georgian OSS
The OSS program rolled into Georgian Downs on Tuesday evening featuring seven $20,000 divisions of Grassroots action for two-year-old trotting fillies.
Striking Gold K rallied to a 2:04.4 score over Fair Lady J and Maisie in the first split for trainer Keith Klages and driver John Devine. It was a maiden-breaking score for the Striking Sahbra miss, who races for owner/breeder Bob Key of Leechburg, Pennsylvania.
B Cor Tanya found the Grassroots level to her liking after going 0-for-5 to start her career against tougher company. She rolled to a 2:00.3 triumph, the quickest on the card for the youngsters, for trainer/driver Riina Rekila and owner Esa Lahtinen of Campbellville, Ont. The daughter of Mutineer defeated Town Hall Babe and Winning Agenda.
Mapley took the third tilt in a time of 2:01.4 for trainer Chris Beaver and driver Dave Boughton. The Malabar Maple rookie front-stepped her way to the maiden-breaking score over Baskin Hanover and Striking Jade for her breeders, John Ryan Melsheimer and Tim Gentry, who share ownership on the filly with fellow Ohioan, Scott Winegardner.
Singin Moe made her pari-mutuel debut a winning one in her OSS assignment for the father/son duo of trainer Jim Whelan and driver Garrett Whelan. The homebred daughter of Amigo Hall, who is owned by the elder Whelan along with Terry & Mary & Clarence Devos of Langton, Ont. Her 2:04 clocking was just enough to hold off runner-up Mi Amiga. Oye Can She Trot was third.
Igual Que Tu went to the front and didn't look back in her $20,000 affair en route to a 2:01.1 triumph for Jojo Chintoh's Westdale Stables and Caryl Leigh MacKenzie. The daughter of Amigo Hall, who was bred by Chintoh, drew off to win by two lengths over Siena Belle and Trinity Krysta for driver Steve Byron and trainer Raz MacKenzie.
Polished Maple was victorious for the first time in her career for owner/breeder Janet Seville of Wyoming, Ont. and trainer Robert Manders when she rallied to a 2:03.3 tally in her division for driver Steve Condren. The Malabar Maple youngster defeated Senorita Conchnita and Saki Bleu.
Ziggy Jiggy staked claim to her second Grassroots trophy of the season when she romped to a three-length win in a time of 2:02.4 in the final division for trainer/driver Kelly Sheppard, who shares ownership on the Southwind Lustre miss with his father, Cliff. Larissa was second best and Lindys Goddess rounded out the top three.
The next OSS Grassroots event of the season for the two-year-old trotting fillies will take place at Grand River Raceway on September 12.
