Christie, Sweeney Disagree On Subsidies

In an article posted earlier today on NorthJersey.com, Governor Chris Christie indicated he hasn’t ruled out signing a bill that includes a three-year purse subsidy totaling $30 million for New Jersey horsemen

.

State Senate President Stephen Sweeney, D-Gloucester, was a prime sponsor of the bill.

“We’re in disagreement about subsidizing the horse racing industry,” Sweeney said. “We feel strongly that there needs to be bridge funding. This isn’t tax dollars being spent, it’s an agreement with the casinos for moving toward independence for the racetracks. There are 13,000 jobs in this [state equine] industry, and we aren’t just going to let this go by the wayside.”
