WEG Pick-4 Ticket (Mon. Dec. 20)

Woodbine Racetrack will present a $50,000 guaranteed pool for its early Pick-4 on Monday evening, and the Woodbine Entertainment Group’s track announcer, Ken Middleton, has scanned Races 4 through 7 to come up with a

plan of attack for constructing a ticket.

Here are Middleton’s thoughts on a Pick-4 ticket for tonight:

Race 4

Four-year-olds and younger clash in this edition of the non-winners of 2 races of $15,000 lifetime conditioned class, and I’ve narrowed it down to a trio of solid contenders.

#4 IRON TRAIN just went through the motions in last week’s return race en route to a sixth-place finish, but I’m expecting improvement tonight now that he has a tightener under his belt. The Ben Wallace pupil showed solid speed earlier this summer, and hopefully he can flash some of it tonight.

#5 PANFERMIN FESTIVAL returns to action after missing back-to-back starts due to weather issues. The gap in the pacer’s schedule prompted trainer Bob McIntosh to buzz the pacer over Mohawk’s oval in a recent qualifier to get him legged up for this assignment. The son of The Panderosa gets a more ideal post to work with tonight as he shoots for his fourth win of the 2010 campaign.

#8 CHEYENNE OXE makes his third start off the shelf for trainer Barry Bird, who had to be pleased with the gelding’s effort over this oval last week. The son of Camluck showed good hustle off the gate, and he finished with plenty of pace even though he was blocked behind horses at the wire in that tilt. He’s capable of stepping up his game, and that makes him a logical contender in this assignment.

Race 5

The second leg of tonight’s Pick-4 is a low-end conditioned event, and it appears to be extremely wide open contest. If your bankroll permits you to do so, I’d strongly suggest taking as many of the trotters as possible in this leg. I’ve focused on eight of them.

#1 FAMOUS MARK was very disappointing last week considering he had a pocket trip and came up empty in the lane. He’s a class horse who can rebound for Team Baillargeon.

#2 THE PRINCIPLE rallied into a slowing tempo last time and managed to pick up third prize. He gets a great post to work from tonight and that might help him attend the pace.

#3 DIGITAL IMAGE had too far to come last week, and as a result he went home empty handed. He’s another class horse who could trip out and make his presence felt in this evenly matched tilt.

#4 FIRST NOTABLE CHIP has been treated to some sweet trips in recent weeks, and that has helped him rack up three consecutive wins for Team Allard. The productive gelding figures to get plenty of support tonight, but he’s still going to need some racing luck to keep the winning streak alive.

#5 STARRY KNIGHT was a handy winner versus easier foes over this oval two starts ago, but he met his match versus tougher company in last week’s follow-up effort. He gets a bit of class relief to work with tonight, and he can come up with an improved performance.

#6 MISTERIZI got things his own way on the lead last time before getting out-sprinted to the wire en route to a second-place finish. The former star of the Open ranks is long overdue to nab a win. He’s capable of delivering based on memory alone.

#8 SAND WYNDHAM has been a 'close but no cigar' type for quite some time, but one of these nights things are going to go his way and he’ll go home a winner. He has the overall speed to beat these types, but he’ll still need some trip luck to get him there.

#9 CANBEC FRIDOLIN has the hot tandem of trainer Richard Moreau and driver Sylvain Filion in his corner. The gelding has been very consistent this season, but he is forced to move up in class and deal with a tougher post position tonight.

Race 6

The third leg of tonight’s Pick-4 is the lowest conditioned class offered on the WEG circuit. There are a few classy campaigners in the group, and I think they are 'must use' horses in this affair.

#2 ENGINE NUMBER NINE was overdriven by driver Paul MacDonell last time, and as a result the gelding finished last. After blowing the carbon out of the engine in that contest, I’d look for him to be forwardly placed in this assignment, as well. He’s capable of wiring them up if MacDonell rates him along at a more sensible clip.

#4 MY FELLA had a huge gap in his schedule going into last week’s assignment, and he was understandably short at the end of the mile. The veteran, who owns a sub-1:50 record and a bankroll in excess of $523,000, has a license to improve in here. His best races generally take place when he’s on or near the lead. Look for a more aggressive tactical approach tonight.

#8 SPEED DEMON is a one-dimensional closer, and that means he’ll have to rely on a bit of speed to chase down. The Cheryl Bloomfield-trained veteran owns a sub-1:49 race record, and has banked more than $769,000 to date. With numbers like that, he’s hard to overlook despite his poor form.

Race 7

Conditioned trotters, and one square gaiter going in for a price tag, wrap up Monday’s Pick-4 wager. I’m going to focus on just a pair of contenders in the anchor leg of the wager.

#2 STAND GUARD tagged along to finish a distant fourth behind the mighty San Pail in last week’s Open Trot. Now he’ll try to capitalize on some class relief for Team Baillargeon. The son of Conway Hall, who was purchased at Harrisburg last month, figured to be a speed threat in here. He’s capable of wiring them up.

#6 ROSE RUN HOOLIGAN got himself into a tough spot last week, but he rallied with plenty of late trot and wound up finishing fourth. I’d look for him to be forwardly placed just as he was last week, and hopefully he gets more racing luck then he had last time out for Team Allard. A victory would put him over $600,000 in lifetime earnings.
