Surrealist In A Shocker
A set of $14,800 Preferred events highlighted Monday’s 12-race program at Western Fair Raceway, and Surrealist spread plenty of holiday cheer
in his pacing assignment.
The graduate of the Ontario Sires Stakes program, who was sent off at odds of 37-1, and driver J.R. Plante sat a pocket trip behind Kaos Agent through fractions of :29.4, 1:01 and 1:31.1 before edging out of the two-hole and driving away to a half-length score in 2:00.2. Kaos Agent held on for the runner-up award, with Eagle Luck taking home the show dough in the eight-horse affair.
Surrealist, who is trained by Ben Wallace, improved his 2010 record to 4-1-0 from 11 trips postward. The four-year-old son of Modern Art, who is now a career winner of $211,414, is owned by Brad Grant of Milton, ON.
Indiana Hall took the co-featured Preferred Trot for the tandem of driver Robert Shepherd and trainer Ian Downey. The seven-year-old son of Striking Sahbra rallied from next-to-last en route to posting the 2-3/4 length score over race favourite Twin B Rawley in 2:02.1. Bank President tagged along to finish third.
The victory was the fifth of the season and the 29th lifetime tally for the gelding, who is owned by S S G Stables of North Boston, NY. The classy campaign has stashed away in excess of $578,000 to date.
Grandma Dorothy marched up to the $12,600 Fillies & Mares Preferred class and got the job done in off-the-pace fashion for trainer/driver Greg Dustin. The four-year-old Mach Three miss drew clear to win by 4-1/4 lengths over Bath Beach in a time of 1:58.3. Stonebridge Celest rounded out the top three finishers in the seven-mare affair.
It was the tenth win of the 2010 campaign for the Mel, Keith and Raymond Wilson’s homebred. She has stashed away more than $58,000 in earnings this season and more than $75,000 to date.
Another noteworthy feat from the Monday card was the five-win performance by teamster Paul MacKenzie. The sulky sitter, who recently joined racing’s 7,000-win club, clicked with On Tap (2:05.2), Stigma Seelster (2:01.4), Western Mark (2:02.3), New Cam (2:01.3) and Mattscape Seelster (2:00.2).
