Ken Shakes Passes, Arrangements Set

After a short battle with cancer, longtime industry participant Ken Shakes of Owen Sound, Ont. passed away on November 11, 2010 in his 68th year

.

Shakes worked as the race secretary for Orangeville and Elmira Raceway before going west to work for Jim Keeling at Cloverdale Raceway in British Columbia. Next, Shakes would move from taking entries to making entries. As a trainer, Shakes would win 114 races and bank purses in excess of $540,000 primarily with horses from his Clover Acres breeding operation.

Shakes eventually moved back to Ontario and settled in Owen Sound, where he is survived by his wife Brenda. Rick and Peter, Shakes' two sons, are active participants in harness racing as well.

There will be a celebration of Ken's life on Saturday, November 27 at the home of Peter Shakes from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 27.
