A trio of rich stakes were contested at Truro Raceway during Sunday afternoon’s 14-race card, with rookie pacers and trotters clashing in the Maritime Breeders Finals
.
The richest event of the day, the $40,258 Maritime Breeders Final for two-year-old pacing colts and geldings, went to Putnams Power in a time of 1:58 for trainer/driver Danny Romo. He hustled the son of Force Of Life-Southview Shania to the lead and successfully sliced out splits of :27.4, :57.2 and 1:28 before cruised home in a :30-second clip to seal the deal. J G S Sandy was second and The Streak finished third.
Ronald Seymour, Jr. and Bruce Donovan of Glace Bay, NS share ownership on the colt, who delivered as the 1-2 favourite. The victory improved his overall record to 12-1-1 in 14 starts while boosting his bankroll to $59,458
Forthena pulled off a mild upset to the tune of 5-1 thanks to her come-from-behind triumph in the $39,167 Maritime Breeders Final for two-year-old pacing fillies. The daughter of Force Of Life-Windsun Athena only needed a :31-second final quarter to grab the half-length score over Our Lady Byng in a career-best clocking of 2:00.1. Force Of Fire was a lapped-on third after setting the pace.
Riley Farms Ltd and Earith Riley of Kensington, PEI share ownership on the rookie, who has manufactured a 5-3-3 record in 13 starts this season. The lion’s share of the purse bumped her cash stash to $31,949.
Waiting On A Woman romped to a nine-length triumph in the $10,526 Maritime Breeders Final for two-year-old trotters for driver Corey MacPherson. The son of Northern Bailey-Southwind Faith led the way through fractions of :30.4, 1:02.4 and 1:33.3 before sprinting home in :29.2 for the 2:03 decision. Sent off as the 1-9 favourite, the gelding easily defeated Maple Leaf Spirit and The Iceman Aireth.
Trainer Mitch Tierney co-owns the youngster with David Tierney of Cornwall, PEI. Together they’ve watched the talented trotter push his winning streak to six-in-a-row while improving his overall record to 9-1-1 in 11 trips postward. He has banked $32,937 to date.
