Freshmen Flock To Truro
A parade of freshmen stars trekked to Truro Raceway on Sunday afternoon, with the rookies going toe-to-toe in five Maritime Breeders Eliminations
. Fillies did battle in a pair of $3,000 affairs, while the colts and gelding sparred in a trio of $3,000 tilts.
Pictonians Souwest extended his winning streak to four-in-a-row thanks to his 1:59.3 triumph in the first division. Gary Chappell sliced out panels of :31, 1:00.4 and 1:30.2 with the Wade Sorrie student before tacking on a :29.1 final quarter en route to the 1:59.3 decision over DWs Jack and Woodmere Sandman.
Sent off as the 1-5 favourite, the son of Western Paradise-Southview Sasha drew away to win by 4-1/4 lengths for owner Daniel Ross of Belfast, PE. The victory improved the gelding’s record to 7-1-0 in 10 starts, and it pushed his earnings to $33,279.
Putnams Power, a brown son of Force Of Life-Southview Shania, went wire-to-wire in the second division for trainer/driver Danny Romo. The colt kicked out splits of :28.2, :58.3 and 1:28 en route to the 3-1/2 length tally over Rebelforce in 1:58. Third prize went to The Streak.
Sent off as the even-money choice, Putnams Power bettered his rookie record to 11-1-1 in 13 starts with the victory. The freshman has stashed away close to $40,000 this season for owners Ronald Seymour and Bruce Donovan of Glace Bay, NS.
J G S Sandy survived a final-half battle for driver Todd Trites to take the final division for the boys. The son of Western Paradise-Liberator led through fractions of :29.1, 1:01.1 and 1:32.3 before firing home in :28.3 to win by a half-length margin over the public’s top choice, The Eagle, in 2:01.1. Roses Dream Boy was third across the finish line.
Bred, owned and trained by Angus MacLean of Port Hood, NS, J G S Sandy improved his 2010 record to 7-3-0 in 14 starts with the 7-1 upset victory. He has banked more than $20,000 to date.
Moon Landing also prevailed by a half-length margin in the first division for the ladies. The daughter of Quick Comeback-Igiantstpfrpankind laid just off the pace before kicking home in :29.4 to post the win in 2:00.3. Gilles Barrieau was behind youngster, who prevailed over Our Lady Byng and Force Of Fire.
Sent off at closing odds of 6-1, Moon Landing improved her rookie record to 3-4-0 in nine trips postward. She has banked more than $18,000 along the way for owner/trainer Patrick Eastwood of Saint John, NB.
Acton Normal pushed her winning streak to eight-in-a-row thanks to her 1:59.3 score it the final division for driver Shane Bernard. The daughter of Toofunnyforwords-Call It Life led through panels of :29.2, 1:00.1 and 1:30.2 before stepping on the gas and zipping home in :29.1. The 1-5 favourite in the eight-filly affair defeated runner-up Forthena by three lengths. K D Go Onn was a well-beaten third.
Owned and trained by Tom Weatherbie of Charlottetown, PEI, Acton Normal now owns a record of 8-0-1 from just 11 trips behind the starting gate. She is closing in on $18,000 in career earnings.
