Bettor B Slick Repeats In Late Bloomer
The Late Bloomer Series continued on Saturday at Sudbury Downs with three $7,500 divisions going to Fish Semalu, repeat winner Bettor B Slick and Nobles Grin
. The series is for non-winners of one race or $15,000 lifetime (fillies and mares $22,500 lifetime).
Fish Semalu ($11.90), who finished a close third in his opening leg division, and trainer-driver David Dowling won the first event by nine lengths in 2:01. He took the lead early, gave way to the popular Cameo Pin (Gerry Belanger), then re-took the lead and kicked away from them all. All Systems Go (Mike MacNeill) and Galloping Glorydee (Luc Maille) were second and third.
Dowling co-owns the three-year-old Modern Art-Verge Dor Semalu colt with 1721009 Ontario Inc of Sudbury, Ont. The win was his second in 14 seasonal starts.
In the next split, Bettor B Slick ($6.10) and driver Mike MacNeill advanced first up from third at the three-quarters mark en route to a half-length victory in 2:01.2 over Trojan Killean (Gerry Belanger). Sharkey Oshea (Dowling) was three-quarters of length behind in third.
The four-year-old son of Bettors Delight-Sand Slicorice is trained by Philippe Belanger for owner John Landuyt of Chatham, Ont. He notched his third win in 12 starts this year.
Nobles Grin ($4.40) was a five and three-quarter length wire-to-wire winner in 1:59.1 for trainer, driver, breeder and co-owner Mike Noble. Perhaps Today (Allan Hohner) and Portland Pat (Mike MacNeill) rounded out the top three.
Noble shares ownership of the three-year-old Grinfromeartoear-North Bay Lady gelding, who was second ahead of Fish Semalu last week, with Edward Gorc of Sudbury, Ont. The victory was his fifth in 14 starts.
