MPHRC Issues Safety Vest Reminder
Under Maritime Provinces Harness Racing Commission rules changed in early 2010, drivers are reminded that safety vests will be required in any race under the jurisdiction of the MPHRC effective January 1, 2011
. Though it will become a requirement on January 1, for their own safety, the MPHRC encourages all drivers to start wearing a safety vest now.
While no specific design or manufacturer was stipulated in the rule issued last April, the commission highly recommends anyone purchasing a safety vest buy one that meets ASTM STANDARD F2681 as it is the intention of the MPHRC to make this the standard a requirement after 2012.
The safety of the participant has long been a concern and was one of the key reasons for the introduction of this rule. A number of other racing jurisdictions have introduced similar safety requirements. In order to establish consistency within the industry, the American Society for Testing and Materials International (ASTM) was asked to establish a standard for a racing vest. The ASTM is one of the largest voluntary standards development organizations in the world, and is a trusted source for technical standards for materials, products, systems, and services.
Having previously developed standards for the manufacture of vests for horseback riding and other horse sports, the ASTM developed a new standard, to be known as the ASTM Standard F2681 Body Protectors for Equine Racing. Those wishing more specific details of the standard, can visit astm.org and search the standard code F2681.

I tried to initiate the requirement of vests way back in 1998-1999 while I was judge. It was frowned upon because of costs and implementation logistics. Comforting to know I was ahead of the time. To me , it was a NO Brainer after seeing so many accidents and drivers getting hurt.
