Finnegan, Pennie Take Rideau Preferreds

Sunday's card of harness racing at Rideau Carleton Raceway co-featured $14,000 Preferred contests both on the pace and on the trot

.

On the trotting side, Ted McDonald settled Finnegan away in third from the four hole before quarter pole moving to the lead and landing there just before the three-eighths marker. With a half in :58.1 and three-quarters in 1:27.3, the last panel turned into a sprint and a :29 final quarter sealed the deal for Finnegan who tripped the timer in 1:56.3. Silverado Dream (Pierre Bovay) was three-quarters of a length back in second with Hesgotlegs (Stephane Gendron) closing well for third.

McDonald also handles the training of Finnegan, a five-year-old altered son of Angus Hall - Dixieland Jazz, for Dobe Stables of Rideau Ferry, Ont. Finnegan now has eight wins on the year in 30 starts.

Switching to the pace, John MacDonald was looking to take favoured Armadilo down the road for his fifth win of the night. MacDonald fired the D M Dilinger gelding out from the outer tier in Post 6 and marched the field through fractions of :26.4, :56.2 and 1:25.2 before coming under pressure from Peenie and Denis St. Pierre. In the stretch, Peenie powered past the pacesetter for the half-length score in 1:53.2. Montreal Phil (Gord Brown) was a length back in third.

Trainer Colin Johnson of Le Gardeur, Quebec holds the papers on Peenie (Real Artist - Tre Cress) with Ecurie JGV Enrg of Laval, Que.
