Hanover's 2010 Season Comes To An End

Hanover Raceway closed out its live 2010 season with perfect afternoon weather. Fourteen races were featured, and the track handed out its season ending awards

The A.B. Fleishauer Horse of the Year was Lyons Geoff, owned by Geoffrey Lyons Mound of Burford, Ont., trained by Bruce Goit and driven by Anthony Haughn. The five-year-old son of Astreos, won four times, was second once, and finished third in his only other start at Hanover.

The Trotter of the Year was Julians Jewel. This four-year-old daughter of Oaklea Julian is owned by Barry Klages of Owen Sound and trainer Jim Ruhl of Tara, Ont. In six starts at Hanover this summer, Julians Jewel won three times and was second twice.

The Claimer of the Year award went to Cam From The West. The five-year-old daughter of Western Maverick is owned by Dustin, Katie and George McClure, who also trains. The McClure’s claimed Cam part way through the season from Darryl and Gerald Holmes of Meaford, Ont. Cam From The West had seven starts at Hanover this summer winning five times, and finishing second once.

Trevor Henry was the top dash driver with 49 wins, one more than Bruce Richardson, who closed the gap with four wins on the final day. Henry also won the top percentage driving award with a UDR of .376 going into the final.

The Ray and Leu Leifso Trainer of the Year was Paul Taylor of Clinton, Ont., who heading into the final day had a UTR of .350, including 21 wins and 20 second place finishes in 105 starts.

Hanover Raceway now hosts simulcast racing in its after the wire lounge until the 2011 season starts on May 7. One of the major events of the off-season will be the ROMP Handicapping contest on Thursday nights in January and February. Teams of two or three players will handicap 10 races each Thursday night, battling for over $10,000 in prize money, including $5,000 for first place.
