ABC Consolations Highlight Truro Card
On the eve of Atlantic Breeders Crown day at Truro Raceway, four $5,000 consolations were contested during the Saturday afternoon card at the half-mile track in Nova Scotia
.
Acton Normal ($2.80) stole the show in the two-year-old filly pace consolation to notched her seventh consecutive victory for driver Shane Bernard and trainer-owner Tom Weatherbie of Charlottetown, P.E.I.
The popular Toofunnyforwords-Call It Life filly left from Post 7 and landed on top at the opening quarter. She led the field all the way to win in 2:00.4 by three and three-quarter lengths. K D Go Onn (Gilles Barrieau) followed from the pocket and Galamoe (Danny Romo) finished third.
The win was Acton Normal’s seventh in 10 outings and lifted her earnings to $16,172.
Fresh off a victory in the Joe O’Brien Memorial Stake at Summerside Raceway on Oct. 1, The Eagle ($3.70) also delivered on his pari-mutuel promise in the two-year-old colt pace consolation with trainer Gilles Barrieau in the bike for co-owners Michael Blanchard of New Glasgow, N.S. and Barry Blanchard of Kars, N.B.
The son of Justice Denied-Hot Asset went three-wide at the third quarter mark and sprinted home in :29.4 for the career-best 2:00 victory by five and a half lengths. Pocket-sitter Calmlea Justin (Todd Trites) was second placed fifth for causing interference at the quarter-pole to Enforcore (Danny Romo). Pacesetter Dws Jack (Mark Bradley) inherited second and Meter Leader (David Floyd Carey) was bumped up to third as a result of the placing.
The win was The Eagle’s second (consecutive) in nine outings and lifted his earnings to $12,971.
We B Success ($13.50) used similar off the pace tactics to win the three-year-old filly pace consolation for trainer-driver Clare MacDonald.
We B Success, the 5-1 third choice in the field, went three-deep past the third interval and sprinted home for the 2:02 score. The homebred daughter of Western Success-Windsun Athena beat out Woodmere Sandollar (Stephen Trites) by one and a half lengths while Iona Paula (Angelo Camilli) rounded out the top three.
The winner of two races in 18 starts this year and $12,526 is owned by Riley Farms Ltd. and Earith Riley of Kensington, P.E.I. Her career earnings climbed to $36,435.
P H Hotshot ($9.60) advanced to the lead after the opening quarter and cruised to a four and a half length score in the final consolation for three-year-old pacing colts. The 7-2 fourth choice stopped the clock in 1:58.3. Box Car Johnnie (Clare MacDonald) rallied from last to place over pocket-sitter Unstoppable Speed (Corey MacPherson).
Dr. R. James Shive of Shubenacadie, N.S. owns, trains and bred the Mantorious-Take Me Higher gelding, who was unraced at two. He has won seven times in 18 outings this year earning $29,291.
