Oak Tree Opener Set For Sandown

Two divisions in the first leg of the time honoured Oak Tree Stake will be raced this Saturday at Sandown Park.

Each division carries a purse of $3,000 with competitors racing for a position in the $12,000 Stake Final to be raced at Sandown Park on July 26.

In the first split, prominent owner/trainer partnership Bill Davis and Niele Jiwan could hold the key to the race with Capablenrewarding, a three-year-old Camluck colt that appears to be capable of improving on his recent Fraser Downs performances.

At Fraser Downs on June 28, the colt was beaten five lengths in seventh place behind Garden Gate Eorr in 1:58. That effort was a week after his qualifier victory at Fraser Downs in 2:00.

Four-year-old Heza Promise put his best foot forward at the last Fraser Downs card, going gate-to-wire to score in a quick 1:56.1 and from Post 3 on Saturday, trainer/driver Barry Treen will be looking for a repeat of that performance.

Kootenay Nron, trained by Kyle Chadwick and reined by Darren Howald, is the 2-1 morning-line favourite.

Sandown Park trained three-year-old filly Luvinajiffy from the Reg Wonnenberg stable is also expected to have plenty of supporters.

The second division of the Oak Tree Stake leg looks like a matchup between Mark Black Cloud (Dave Hudon) and Film At Ten (John Abbott).

The Hudon trained four-year-old Mark Black Cloud, who has drawn the inside post position, paced in 1:56.2 when he finished third to Garden Gate Eorr at Fraser Downs on June 28. In the program, he is listed at 3-1.

Film At Ten, trained by Wendell Smith and installed as the 2-1 morning-line favourite, was the runner-up in that race.

The second leg of the Oak Tree goes postward next Saturday.
