Snow White Ready For Del Miller Memorial
Kevin Lare spent a good deal of time getting Snow White ready for her Delvin Miller Memorial elimination race on July 4, but following the filly's 3-1/2 length victory he made sure everyone knew who deserved the praise.
"That's no credit to me, that's all credit to Snow White," Lare said. "She's a world champion, she wants to be a racehorse; she is a racehorse. She wants to face the best that there is out there."
Snow White, driven by John Campbell, went off stride in her first start of the year on June 27 in the Coaching Club Trotting Oaks.
After receiving treatment from a chiropractor last week to treat a soreness issue, Snow White rebounded with her 1:54 triumph in the Miller elim. She was pressured by Saorse, driven by Louis Baudron, on the final turn but pulled away in the stretch.
"I can breathe again," Lare said. "I was hoping to just get out of that turn and I knew her world champion spirit will show up then. I think everyone can see it, that we can't barrel around the turn. But she's fine, and we'll be a lot better next week. Performance-wise, speed-wise, I'm tickled to death."
Snow White received the O'Brien and Dan Patch Awards as the best two-year-old trotting filly of 2007, when she became both the fastest (1:52.4) and richest ($1.2 million) two-year-old trotter in harness racing history.
Many fans are hoping for a showdown between undefeated Deweycheatumnhowe and Snow White in the August 2nd Hambletonian, but Lare is holding off any making any decisions.
"I think 'Dewey' is pretty much answering my calls right now," Lare said. "I think he's pretty much telling me where I have to go. Right now, we're just concentrating on (Friday) and we'll worry about the entries after that."
One Tough Lass, who won the Coaching Club, was victorious in the other Miller elim, beating Diana Hall by 2-3/4 lengths in 1:54.2. One Tough Lass, driven by Tim Tetrick, followed Diana Hall and driver Ron Pierce in the second-over position before swinging three wide for her move to the lead in the stretch.
"She got a great trip and she responded well," Tetrick said. "She had a lot of trot getting home. Last week, she got lucky when Snow White made a break and made it easy for her. The week before, she was loaded with trot, but got locked in and was running over horses. She's peaking at the right time."
Trained by Ross Croghan, One Tough Lass has won two of four races this year and four of 12 lifetime. Diana Hall, trained by Francisco Del Cid, has one victory in three races this season and five in 11 career starts.
"I think if the trips were reversed, the results would've been reversed," Pierce said. "My filly raced big. At the head of the lane, she dug in. I knew she was a real nice filly. It was a good tightener for her."
Below is the field in alphabetical order for Friday's $300,000 Delvin Miller Memorial. Snow White and One Tough Lass won the elimination races and their connections got to select post positions. Choosing first, Snow White's camp took Post 2, followed by One Tough Lass' connections taking Post 3.
