Charles I. Smith Final Will Feature Six
Six colts are scheduled to go postward the $80,000 Charles I. Smith Trot on September 10, 2010 at Freehold
Raceway.
The six New Jersey-sired three-year-old trotters were the only entrants, so no elimination races were necessary this week. All will have spots on the gate in the final.
The entrants are, in alphabetical order: Borga Crash, Flashback, Flex The Muscles, Jetblue Volo, Mamas Boo Bear and Senor Glide.
Flex The Muscle, a son of Muscles Yankee, comes into the Smith with a three-race winning streak, a sweep of New Jersey Sire Stakes starts at Freehold, including the $100,000 final on August 27. The Ray Schnittker trainee has been first or second in eight of 13 starts this year and on-the-board in 18 of 26 lifetime. David Miller has drawn the driving assignment for many of the colt’s starts, including his Freehold victory in May in the $156,000 Dexter Cup. Miller previously won the Smith in 2002 with Spat One.
Borga Crash, by Windsongs Legacy, has four wins, four seconds and two thirds from 15 starts this year. Tommy Anderson owns and trains the trotter who has Frode Fladen listed to drive.
Flashback, by Classic Photo, from the team of Andy and Julie Miller, banked more than $50,000 at two but has added only one win and less than $10,000 in 2010. Andy Miller drove and Julie Miller trained the 2008 Smith winner Spam Spade.
Jetblue Volo, by Yankee Glide, added $56,266 this year to push his earnings over the $102,000 mark. His 2010 victories were in an elim of the Goodtimes Stakes at Mohawk Racetrack and a division of the Topkins-Geers at Tioga Downs. Cat Manzi, who is listed to drive Jetblue Volo, previously won the Smith four times since 1997 with Allison Hollow (1997), Hard Rock N Roll (2001), Make It Hot (2004) and Enough Talk (2006). Jetblue Volo’s trainer, Anette Lorentzon, harnessed the 2009 Smith winner, Howthehaloareyou, and the runner-up, Vesuvio AS.
Mamas Boo Bear, by Muscles Yankee, has finished in-the-money in seven of 12 starts this year. Karen Garland trains the colt and Steve Smith handles the driving.
Senor Glide, by Yankee Glide, won his Yonkers Trot elim and finished third in the final for his richest payday. Senor Glide, trained by Jimmy Takter, has finished in the top three in 11 of 23 career starts. He will be driven by Marcus Johansson. Previous Takter trainees to win the Smith were Climbing Bud in 1995 and Broke Even in 2000.
The stakes record of 1:57 was set in 2007 by Princetonian, a Dream Vacation colt driven by Daniel Dube and trained by Ray Remmen
Sponsored by the Standardbred Breeders & Owners Association of New Jersey, the Charles I. Smith was named in memory of a New Jersey harness racing pioneer, founder of the New Jersey Sire Stakes program and owner of trotters.
