Matthews Inherits Mildred Williams Win
Angie Matthews and Scotian Delight were declared the winners after an eventful Mildred Williams Driving Series event at Grand River Raceway on Friday.
When the gates opened in the $3,600 first race, Matthews shot Scotian Delight to the point of command and they set the tempo in :30.1, 1:00.2 and 1:30.3. Treasure Planet and Kris Hie took the two-hole trip, but it was at the third marker when things got confusing on the front.
Hie and Treasure Planet drove through along the rail, which evidently caused interference to Matthews and Scotian Delight by pushing them wide around the final turn. Treasure Planet was the unofficial winner in 1:59.4, but was placed behind Scotian Delight to second after a Judges inquiry and driver's objection.
Allegedly So (Ann Larsen) completed the top three.
Scotian Delight, who was claimed in the race for $4,500, had been owned by John Foran and Steve Adams. Trained by Dave Matson, the five-year-old Camluck gelding is two-for-21 this year with earnings of $11,406.
For Angie Matthews, who resides in Grand Valley, Ontario, it was her first win of the campaign in four tries. She has 16 career driving wins and is just short of $50,000 in purses.
The ladies of the Mildred Williams have a full weekend ahead of them. On Saturday, they will compete at Woodstock Raceway in the afternoon and at Hanover Raceway during the evening. Clinton Raceway hosts the ladies on Sunday afternoon.
