Whelan Not Changing His Position

Supporters of New Jersey's racing industry provided a power-in-numbers showing last Friday when more than 300 showed up at the Atlantic City Gaming Summit, but according to pro-Atlantic City State Senator Jim Whelan, he and others in the state aren't budging from their positions

.

“I know what happened on Friday (at the summit) was we saw lots of different people with different interests putting forward ideas,” Whelan was quoted as saying in an article on pressofatlanticcity.com. “There are still folks who believe in a casino and VLTs at the Meadowlands. But we have a governor who opposes that, and a Senate President who opposes that. So we’re better off focusing on solutions that are more viable.”

In terms of Ray Lesniak -- the New Jersey senator that is for the legalization of online sports wagering within the state, which would in turn aid the racing industry -- Whelan said, “I don’t know what Sen. Lesniak is doing with that, quite frankly” and that lawmakers should use the upcoming September session for problem-solving, rather than bickering.
