Meadows Invader Beats Top Scioto Mares
Shell I Attack attacked at the start of the Friday night feature at Scioto Downs and made every post a winning one for driver J.D. Wengerd. She scored over the track’s best filly and mare pacers in 1:55
.
Favourite Shell I Attack shipped in from The Meadows and won her second race in 24 tries this year for owner-trainer Jim Kiesel of Litchfield, Ohio.
Wengerd sent her to the front in a :27-second opening quarter while David Myers positioned second choice Jellyfish Joy right on her back. Wengerd put the brakes on in the second quarter, pacing that panel in :29.3 and easing to the three-quarter pole in 1:26.
Midway around the final turn, Jellyfish Joy pulled from the pocket and shot out to challenge the leader. She appeared to be gaining ground as they turned into the stretch, but Shell I Attack found another gear and flashed a final quarter in :29 seconds to win by a length. Gran Cameo nosed out Cat Burgler to finish third.
Shell I Attack paid $5.60 to win.
After the race Kiesel said it was the first time in many races that Shell I Attack cut all the fractions in a mile.
On the Friday program, popular drivers Kayne Kauffman and J.D. Wengerd both scored driving triples.
Driver Russell Swartz, who was sidelined for three months with an injury, won earlier in the evening with Robinmeblind by 8-1/4 lengths in 1:55.2.
