Truro Hosts Top Shelf Program

Truro Raceway treated its fans to a terrific Tuesday program thanks in large part to the stars of the Atlantic Sires Stakes program

.

It was a card that focused on youth, as two and three-year-olds battled in their respective divisions of the A.T.S.S. and a collection of young pilots went sulky-to-sulky in the Young Guns Driver Challenge. Here’s a complete recap of what transpired on Tuesday evening’s 13-race program:

Two-Year-Old Trotters

Maple Leaf Spirit won for the fourth time in as many tries in her $5,340 assignment for trainer/driver Ralph Annear, who also bred and owns the talented daughter of Meadowagogo-Maple Leaf Legacy. She led the field through fractions of :33.2, 1:06 and 1:40 en route to trotting the mile in 2:11.2. The Iceman Aireth was second best and Rustico Redflame finished third.

Waiting On A Woman also went gate-to-wire in his $5,340 assignment for driver Corey MacPherson and trainer Mitch Tierney. The gelded son of Northern Bailey-Southwind Faith chopped out splits of :30, 1:03 and 1:34 before trotting home in :31.2 to win in 2:05.2 over B J High Meadow Red and Red Lobster. The homebred is now a three-time winner in four career starts for Mitch and David Tierney of Cornwall, PEI.

Three-Year-Old Trotters

B J Eldorado extended his win streak to three-in-a-row thanks to a 2:06.2 triumph in his $4,300 effort for driver Mike Stevenson and trainer Bert Honkoop, who also bred and owns the gelding.. The son of Meadowagogo-Leap Year Hanover supplied fractions of :31.2, 1:05 and 1:36.2 before cruising home in a :30-second clip en route to the 2:06.2 win. Rosetown Dove was the bridesmaid, and Keiths Daisy grabbed the show dough. The trotter has stashed away more than $20,000 in his career.

Rustico Tapdancer improved her sophomore record to three wins in five starts thanks to a 2:05 triumph in her $4,300 tilt. The John Pineau-trained daughter of Meadowagogo-Askmetodance, who was handled by driver Brian MacPhee, drew clear to win by 1-3/4 lengths over West River Unique. J K Queen rounded out the top three finishers. Pineau bred and co-owns the youngster with partners Myron Ford and Sharon MacLeod of Charlottetown, PEI.

Scarlet Patti front-stepped to a 2:05.2 victory in her $4,300 assignment for trainer/driver Darryl MacLean, who also bred the trotting lass. The daughter of PJs Nabby-Scarlet Nite cleared at the quarter pole and led throughout the remainder of the mile en route to her win over A C Jocker and Glencove Umay. Gordon MacLean holds the papers on the filly who is now 3-for-4 this season after going 11-for-13 as a rookie. She has banked more than $42,000 to date.

Two-Year-Old Pacing Fillies – “A” Division

Acton Noisey kept her undefeated streak intact when she rallied to win her $7,080 tilt for driver Todd Trites and trainer Nicholas White. It was her fourth win in as many tries for owner Steve Morton of Windsor, NS, who purchased the filly for a mere $700 from the 2009 Nova Scotia Provincial Exhibition Yearling Sale. She stopped the clock in 2:03.2 defeating Woodmere Gorgeous and Countisfleet. The filly has banked more than $14,000 to date.

Moon Landing was a maiden-breaking winner in a time of 2:00 in the second $7,080 division for driver Gilles Barrieau and owner/trainer Patrick Eastwood of Saint John, NB. The daughter of Quick Comeback-Igiantstpfrpankind nearly doubled her bankroll by defeating Force Of Fire and K D Go Onn.

Yankee Dancer is now undefeated in two tries thanks to her 2:01.3 triumph in the third $7,080 division. The daughter of Coastocoast Yankee-Pillar Of Strength and driver rallied to win by a head for driver Phillip Hodgson and trainer Margo Fisher. Our Lady Byng was a lapped-on runner-up and third prize went to Galamoe. Garnet Taylor of Durham Bridge, NB owns the pacer, who was a $1,900 purchase from last year’s Nova Scotia Provincial Exhibition Yearling Sale.

Two-Year-Old Pacing Fillies – “B” Division

Hushs Funny Girl broke her maiden by winning the opening $2,500 division in 2:06 for trainer/driver Henry Smallwood. The daughter of Toofunnyforwords-Acton Hush Hush took advantage of a pocket trip en route to defeating Forthena and Fire N Lace. Debbie Francis and Joan Lowthers of Windsor, NS share ownership on the filly.

Camco Paula got her picture taken for the first time thanks to her 2:03.2 triumph in the second $2,500 division for trainer/driver Marc Campbell. She sat a pocket trip for the majority of the mile before rallying to the win over Clay Nitro and Someshoresomewhere. The filly is owned by Natasha and Darryl MacLean of Winsloe, PEI.

Exclusive Offer roared away to a 7-1/2 length victory in her $2,500 tilt for trainer/driver Darren Crowe, who watched the daughter of Coastocoast Yankee-Ardor Chymes stop the teletimer in 2:04.2. Elm Grove Foxtrot was second best and Sweetwater Binky took home the show dough. William Shearer of Brookfield, NS owns the rookie, who won for the first time in three tries.

Young Guns Driver Challenge

Brad Smith of Charlottetown, PEI took home bragging right in this year’s Neil “Chops” Campbell Young Guns Driver Challenge thanks to a win and a second-place finish in the two-race competition.

The event, which attracted a number of young reinsman from many of the surrounding tracks, proved to be a fan favourite once again.

Smith was presented with a complete harness kit from Neil “Chops” Campbell’s son, Neil Campbell, Jr.
