Notable Youngsters Qualify At Mohawk
Some solid aged horses and six-figure two-year-olds took their turns during Mohawk Racetrack's Tuesday morning qualifying session
.
The first dash of the morning saw driver Paul MacDonell and the Paula Wellwood-trained Pointe Of Honour record their second consecutive qualifying victory, as the -four-year-old Striking Sahbra horse went gate to wire from Post 3 and hang on for a nose victory in 1:57.2.
Trainer Kevin McMaster and driver Luc Ouellette hooked up in Race 2 and clicked with four-year-old Allamerican Native mare Insider Tip. The duo left from the rail, cut all the fractions and recorded an eight and a quarter-length win in a sharp 1:53.4.
After having worked out a pocket trip in Race 3, driver Rick Zeron and trainer Steve Bossence clicked with three-year-old Angus Hall gelding Civic Duty, who trotted off to a one and a half-length win in 1:57.1.
After having left from the rail, Fresh Herb seemed to find the engine rather cushy in Race 4, as the three-year-old Bob McIntosh-trained and Steve Condren-driven gelding cut all the fractions and won by open lengths. The son of Camluck stopped the clock in 1:55.1 and the margin of victory was four lengths. The qualifier was also the charted return of Secrets Nephew's full younger brother, Secretsothernephew, who was returning from some time off.
The rest of the card was strictly for two-year-olds, as they rounded out the final five dashes on the morning program.
The first of the juveniles to emerge victorious was Talespinner (Conway Hall--Fairy Tail), a bay colt which was a $100,000 yearling purchase in Lexington last fall. Trained by Ben Baillargeon and driven by Mario Baillargeon, Tailspinner left from Post 2 this morning, cut all the fractions, and posted a 13 and a quarter-length victory in 1:57.3 during Race 5.
Race 6 saw the Ryan Maxwell-trained and Roger Mayotte-driven See The Judge (Artiscape--No Matter) hit the wire first in 1:57. The bay colt was making his third qualifying start of his career. The margin of victory was three-quarters of a length. Lisa Luck, a full sister to 2002 Metro Pace winner Sir Luck, also took part in the dash and finished second after having closed from mid-pack.
Dancin Darlin (Angus Hall--Dance To Market), who is out of the same mare that produced Il Villaggio 2,1:55.4 ($488,183), qualified victoriously in Race 7 this morning. With Jack Moiseyev in the bike for trainer John Kopas, the $140,000 Canadian Open Yearling Sale purchase went to the top from Post 7 and recorded a three and a quarter-length victory in 1:59.
Moiseyev was triumphant in the next dash (Race 8), as he piloted the Charalambos Christoforou-trained filly Western (Western Hanover--Noble Sandy) to an off-the-pace victory in what was her career charted debut. The filly got away mid-pack and closed for a neck victory in 1:58.4.
The last race saw the Jeff Gillis-trained and Jody Jamieson-driven gelding Sim Brown (Angus Hall--Trophy Bass) go to the top early, relinquish the lead, and then trot off to a four and a quarter-length win in 1:59.1.
